Injured
Koala's
Released
During the last couple of
months I am delighted to
report that we have released
15 Koalas back into their
natural habitat.
After the Anakie Bushfires
we rescued many koalas who were badly burnt, it gave us great pleasure
to know that they are now well and can enjoy being back with their
fellow koalas.
Grateful thanks to Marilyn & Gordon Blankey for their help
particularly in providing a halfway house and release centre for the
last remaining females from the Anakie bushfires. Marilyn has now
reported that they have been released.

Is
there's a Possum
in your roof ?
What are you going to do about
it? Well, you could trap it and let
it go out in the bush. Bad luck,
you have just killed a possum
and become a law breaker. It is illegal to trap and release a possum
away from its usual habitat with fines of up to $5,000.
Start by making your roof "possum proof". Check to find out where they
are getting in and what is the best way of cutting off access. Then
evict them before closing up their doorway - otherwise the smell will be
a bigger distraction than the noise.
A possum box in a tall tree will let them
know that you really like them, but not as a tenant in your home.
Jirrahlinga , will be only too happy to give you some additional hints
on how you and your furry critters can become really good neighbours.

Trades People
We have been asking for Trades People with some time on their hands to
contact us. We have lots of jobs that desperately need attention. We
haven't exactly been inundated with phone calls, and I can advise that
we are still looking for:
- Builders/Carpenters
- Painters
- Electricians
- Plumbers
- Tilers
- General Maintenance People
- Gardeners

When you next come to Jirrahlinga
we would like you to get to know
the staff and keepers that work
tirelessly for Jirrahlinga. Everyone
does have a badge, and we are
hoping that we can have the photo
boards back in the front office so
that you know who they are and
what they do. Chris is the friendly face that greets you
when you come to Jirrahlinga. She is not only the first point of contact
though, she makes a great coffee, and can be seen just about everywhere
at the Sanctuary. She always has a smile and is eager to assist

HELP JIRRAHLINGA, THERE'S A
SEAL ON THE BEACH
The Australian Fur Seal. They frequently come up
onto our beaches
to sunbake
or doze off. They will also take refuge
on our
beaches during bad weather.
That is when their problems begin.
It is normal for seals to come onto the shore to rest. They will also
bring their
pups onto the beach and leave them while they go "shopping for food" so
they
will be back for their baby's, they haven't abandoned them. Seals have trouble
with is people crowding around them and cutting off their access to the
sea.
Spring is baby time. The Australian Fur Seal does not give birth at sea
but rather comes up onto rocky outcrops.
Periodically fur seals need to come onto a shore when moulting which may
take upto 10 days. At that time they are no longer waterproof and cold
water can give them hypothermia which may result in death.
Jirrahlinga receives regular calls advising us of seals on the beach.
Our practice is too monitor them to make sure they don't have a serious
injury. Even then we may just treat them on the beach and allow nature
to take its course.
So if you see a seal on the beach, just leave it alone, let it sleep and
return to the sea in its own time.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES chase the seal back into the water. Allow it to
return to sea when it is ready. If it hasn't moved in the past 24Hrs,
call Jirrahlinga then and we will check it out.
